The first figures of the tourist season for 2013 on the Costa del Sol have been released by the local authorities and have shown an increase in visitors from abroad compared to the same time last year.
Nearly 6 million people have already used Malaga Airport during the first six months of 2013 and president of the Tourism Board, Elias Bendodo explained that the airport is a major factor in attracting tourists to the region.
“Having an infrastructure like this, new and modern is a reflection of our image as a tourist destination and gives us a competitive advantage over other places.” he said.
Malaga and the Costa del Sol is now accessible from over 130 international destinations which has contributed to nearly 80 per cent of all passengers so far this year arriving at Malaga Airport on an international flight.
The United Kingdom and Ireland made up almost half of that 80 per cent, resulting in a rise of around 2.6 per cent but no where near as much as the 22 per cent rise in German visitors to the area so far this year and the 30 per cent increase in visitors from Scandinavia.
Figures have exceeded all expectations in the first six months and there are high hopes for record numbers being recorded by the time the summer season is over on the Costa del Sol.
